take. “We decided that the plan, being mostly open, is
adaptable to a wide range of scenarios,” said Klinner.
Construction was completed in May 2020, and the firm
moved in—to the extent possible given the timing.
About four employees have worked in the office most
days, but as of this writing (mid-April 2021), things
were picking up, including the first client meeting in
one of the rooms in the “floating box.”
Perhaps not surprisingly, given that the exterior
facades of the Southern Building feature sumptuous,
shiny, white, and carefully-composed Beaux-Arts
ornamentation, stripping the interiors down to the
somewhat random, gritty, and richly colored structure
was a foreign concept to the building’s management.
But Studio Twenty Seven’s suite has sparked a
revolution. “Everyone—from management to custodial
staff—was really enthralled by our columns and
ceiling,” said Klinner. In what is perhaps the ultimate
compliment, the stripped-down approach is now being
replicated in other suites.
