A Residential Architect Branches
into Commercial Design
by Steven K. Dickens, AIA, LEED AP
The photos are not fooling you. The Greencourt Innovation
Center, by McInturff Architects, is one of the coolest new office
buildings in the Washington area. To be sure, circumstance
allowed for substantial design freedom and effort that few
architects enjoy on any project, especially office buildings. This
is a “boutique” building in the strictest sense of the phrase, but
it lives up to the highest aspiration that that term suggests.
Mark McInturff, FAIA, is well known to ARCHITECTUREDC
readers, primarily for his custom single-family residential
projects, which perennially win Washingtonian and AIA|DC
Chapter awards. The firm has done other project types, however.
“I always say that I’ve done 400 houses and one of everything
else,” joked McInturff. Clients for his brand of inventive,
individualistic, sometimes idiosyncratic design are not limited
to homeowners, but the custom house remains the touchstone.
“[For non-residential projects], we want clients who care
about their spaces as much as they care about their homes,”
McInturff stated.
