As stated in the building’s NRHP listing, Garfinckel’s “set the tone for style and sophistication
in Washington for eighty years.” The design for Convene-Hamilton Square is informed by that
legacy. Julius Garfinckel (1874-1936), the firm’s founder, “devoted himself to his store, spending long
hours in the office and visiting every department and speaking to every employee twice a day.”
He might be gratified today by the meticulous attention that FOX Architects paid to the building’s
history and architectural details in developing the design for Convene-Hamilton Square.
