preparing a pro bono feasibility study for the building’s
renovation, McInturff was hired by the Writer’s
Center to oversee the first phase of the work, which
included a rejuvenation of the basement-level offices
and classrooms along with the creation of a studio
space offering private workstations for local writers.
High windows lining the former service ramp bring
natural light into the studio, while frosted glass interior
partitions allow daylight to filter into adjacent offices
and conference rooms.
McInturff also designed the second-phase
renovations, focusing on the main level interiors and
the entry façade. A partial reconfiguration of the floor
plan opened up the reception area and optimized office
spaces, while swaths of bright colors and bold signage
enhance wayfinding. On the exterior, McInturff created
a new front porch by adding slender extensions to the
projecting beams, supported by equally svelte columns,
all painted in bright red. A new exterior ramp and
indoor lift ensure universal accessibility.
McInturff’s son, Jeff McInturff, cut his teeth on
the initial phase of the project, while Colleen Gove
Healey, AIA, was the lead for the second phase.
