In recent years, there has been much talk of a “missing middle” Project: Kozo Condominium,
in the new-home market. Most new residential development has 1434 Chapin Street, NW, Washington, DC
bifurcated into either detached single-family houses or large
apartment buildings or complexes. This “middle” is defined in Architect: Jonathan Kuhn Architect
various ways, often emphasizing development that is denser Landscape Architect: Norton Land Design
than, but compatible with (and acceptable to residents of) single- Structural Engineer: FMC & Associates
family neighborhoods. In denser urban areas, the term can also MEP Engineer: KK Engineering
Civil Engineer: Oyster, Imus, Petzold & Associates
refer to small multi-family buildings, typically with two to ten General Contractor: P.T. Blooms
units, generally on infill sites—in this sense of the term, the
        main challenge is financial viability.
