Respecting the owners’ wishes to work with the
existing structure as much as possible, the design team,
which included project architect Justin Donovan, AIA, and
Nolan Ediger, AIA, LEED Green Associate, prioritized
the most problematic aspects of the house. Chief among
these from an aesthetic standpoint were the chaotic
roofscape, lack of views to the woods, and what Donovan
described as a “depressing” arrival experience. The
architects realized that the southeast corner of the house,
surrounding the main entry, was the spot where all of
these problems collided. A relatively modest alteration
there could go a long way toward improving the house’s
appearance and livability.
